West Midlands project wins International Award for Languages
A project involving five schools in the West Midlands has won a European Language Label for its work combining language learning with skills needed in the fashion industry which demonstrates the contribution of languages to business success. Fashion International drew inspiration from the international fashion industry to develop activities combining skills such as business, manufacturing, design and events management with language learning. Over 250 students took part in the project, which brought home to them the value of languages in a wide range of careers.
Chris Everall, manager at Regional Language Network West Midlands, commented: ‘The whole team is delighted to have been awarded a European Language Label for Fashion International. It’s been so rewarding and stimulating to work together and to see how much the students have enjoyed working on the project and what fantastic pieces of work they have produced.’
The European Language Label Award, which recognises innovative and effective practice in language teaching and learning, was presented at a ceremony at the European Commission’s UK office in London to mark the European Day of Languages. Eleven awards were won by schools and colleges in the UK, along with awards for excellence in education-business partnerships involving foreign languages.
Kathryn Board, Head of Languages and CILT at CfBT Education Trust, said: ‘At a time when there is so much negative news regarding language learning in the UK, it is heartening to have so many examples of innovative and creative work which not only help pupils to see the relevance of language learning but boost their achievement as well. The winners deserve immense congratulations for showing what can be done and pointing the way to a revival of language learning in future.’
