Foreign language films at Number 8 Community Arts Centre

A selection of foreign language films will be screened at Number 8 over the Winter Season beginning with a new adaptation of the classic French film The Well Digger’s Daughter (PG) on Thursday 12 January at 7.30pm. Set in Provence in 1914 the film tells the tale of an encounter between Patricia, a young girl, and Jacques, a fighter pilot, and the resulting pregnancy that throws both their families into turmoil.

Based on the 2005 novel by Lisa See, Snow Flower & the Secret Fan (12A) tells the story of two isolated young women in 19th Century China who communicate furtively through a secret language written between the folds of a white silk fan. Their story is set against the struggles of young women in demanding modern day Shanghai. The film will be screened at Number 8 in Chinese with English subtitles on Monday 16 January at 10.30am and 7.30pm and on Tuesday 17 January at 7.30pm.

For a Valentine’s Day treat, magical French favourite Amélie (15) will be screened on Monday 13 February at 10.30am and Tuesday 14 February at 7.30pm. Re-issued to celebrate its 10th Anniversary Amélie was a sensation upon it release, smashing box office records for foreign language films.
